Briayna, Lotte, Randy and Sarah worked with the film's impact team to bring many public screenings and panel discussions to communities throughout the US in 2024 and early 2025.
THE COST OF INHERITANCE explores the complex issue of reparations in the United States and takes a personal approach to understanding our history, systemic injustices, and inequities. We follow descendants of enslavers and the enslaved as they are reckoning with their past and trying to find a just way forward. Through compelling personal narratives, community inquiries, and scholarly insights, it aims to inspire understanding of the scope and rationale of the reparations debate.

...Dula’s mother had passed away and Dula took up the task of sorting through her things. She found a small, old book that was still well-preserved. Dula opened it to find inventories of slaves, hundreds of them, with their individual monetary worths listed.

At the national level, progress on making formal reparations for slavery has largely stalled. Various efforts at both the state and local levels have gained traction and seen more success, however.
But what about for individuals? How can white folks whose ancestors benefited from — and even profited because of — slavery begin to directly engage in reparative justice? Lotte Lieb Dula hopes to provide a path forward.
A retired financial strategist, Lieb Dula is the founder of Reparations4Slavery, a site that facilitates racial healing. She spoke with Marketplace special correspondent Lee Hawkins as part of our Golden Promises series, which explores the battle over slavery reparations in California. The following is an edited transcript of their conversation.
